Guidelines and Rules for Speech and Drama 2025 - PRIMAY SCHOOL

Competitors, teachers and parents should read the Entry Guidelines and General Rules of the Warrnambool Eisteddfod at the beginning of the Syllabus and the Programme.

All information with regard to entry, timing, entry fees, prizes and specific conditions for each section is available on the Stardom on-line entry system (www.stardom.com.au).

NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE CLOSING DATE.

GENERAL CONDITIONS:

******* It is a requirement that each individual performer, group or school sanction the recording of performance (unless there is a specific reason, for instance a legal condition, for exclusion).

Please be aware publicity shots may be taken during the Eisteddfod. Please advise the Convenors if there is a specific reason - for instance, legal condition - for exclusion of a particular performer.

NOTE: Recorded performances and photography will only be used for advertising the Eisteddfod and will remain the copyright of Warrnambool Eisteddfod Inc. They are not to be taken by audience members.

  1. Competitors’ names and birth dates should be on the entry. 
  2. Competitors must submit copies for the adjudicator at registration at least 30 minutes before commencement of section. These ideally will be at check-in with competitor number and section codes.
  3. Copy of ‘Poem Written by Competitor’ to be forwarded to the coordinator Damien Webster (damienwebster61@gmail.com)  two weeks prior to the event. If not received by this date, the competitor will not be eligible to compete in the section.

 

  1. In the ‘Poem for Two’ sections, a competitor may only enter ONCE. NO MULTIPLE ENTRIES WITH ANOTHER PARTNER WILL BE ALLOWED.
  2. Competitors competing in more than one section must not repeat the same item.
  3. Competitors who have won first prize at a Warrnambool Eisteddfod in 2024 may not perform that winning item again in 2025. This applies to individual or group performances. All performances will be checked and those breaking the rule will not be considered for a place.
  4. Backing sounds and/or musical accompaniments are not allowed.
  5. Recital works must be performed from memory except where otherwise stated. – Adjudicators will provide prompts if needed. Audience are not to prompt.
  6. All competitors, teachers and parents should ensure that works performed are suitable for a "family audience". Care should be taken with language, gesture, costuming, movement, lyrics and concepts. Adjudicators may reserve the right to disqualify performers presenting unsuitable material.
  7. Competitors in ALL sections must report to the Copies Table upon arrival to "check in". This must be NO later than Fifteen Minutes prior to the commencement of the session
    -->The Copies Table will be found inside the main door at St. Pius Function Room.
  8. Competitors who have not reported as present prior to the beginning of their Section may be considered ineligible to perform unless notification has been given to the presiding Committee member.
  9. Competitors need to be ready to take their place on stage at the beginning of the Section and in the order as set down in the Program. Staff and Volunteers to support entrants.
  10.  All adjudicator copies are to be marked: Competitor number and Section Number ONLY as per the program! No Names.
  11. Prizes - All competitors that receive 1ST, 2nd, 3rd and Honourable Mention/Highly Commended will receive a ribbon.
    All other prizes and specific conditions for each section are available on the Stardom on-line entry system(www.stardom.com.au) and in the programme.
  12. Theatre etiquette is expected at all times. During performances there should be NO movement while any competitor is performing on stage in the Hall/Theatre. People may not disrupt, distract or in any way interfere with the performance of a competitor on stage. Appropriate, respectable applause is welcomed to encouraged for ALL competitors.
  13.  The Adjudicator writes a report on each competitor's performance. This report will be available to be collected approximately 15 minutes after conclusion of each section.
  14. There is to be NO prompting of competitors. The Adjudicator is the only person allowed to prompt the competitor if needed. There will be absolutely NO prompting from the audience. Anyone found in violation will receive a warning from the President or committee members and may be advised to leave the venue.

Consideration will be given by the adjudicator to the quality of selection. Chairperson introduces the title of the piece. Competitor enters stage in character and starts recital immediately without introducing poem. MUST BE RECITED.

Fairy story, fable or any story suitable for the age group. Props optional. This is not reciting an 'off by heart' story, it is TELLING a story. Imagine you are TELLING a story to a little child at bedtime. MUST BE TOLD, NOT READ.

Own choice extract to be selected by the student from a work of fiction. Student should introduce the novel and give a brief reason for reading the particular extract. A legible copy of the extract must be presented at registration.

SP12 Impromptu Effective Reading for three Competitors - Set Piece Trio     Years 5 & 6

Students will be given the highlighted script three minutes before performance and have 3 minutes preparation.

SP13 Poem Written by Competitor (to be read) Solo     Years 5 & 6

Time Limit: 02:00

Time limit 2 mins. POINTS: 60% for poem 40% for reading. Poems must be emailed to the convenor TWO WEEKS BEFORE EVENT- warrnambool.speechd.eisteddfod@gmail.com All poems will be on display in foyer at the venue.

SP14 Character Monologue Solo     Years 5 & 6

Time Limit: 04:00

A memorised solo performance from an existing or self-devised script with appropriate movement. Props are to be kept to a minimum. Costumes are optional.

SP15 News Reading Solo     Years 4, 5 & 6

Time Limit: 04:00

A reading appropriate for radio of news and events. Script to be self-devised. Can be fact or fiction. The script will present international, national, local and sports items. Adjudication will be based on reading and voice presentation only.
