CHORAL CONTEST
VENUE: 1870 Founders Theatre, Federation University, Mt Helen Campus
ADJUDICATOR: Jonathan Grieves-Smith PRIMARY/SECONDARY SCHOOL AND OPEN CHORAL SECTIONS All music in choral sections is own selection unless otherwise specified. Not all open sections exclude school choirs SPECIAL CONDITIONS To be read in conjunction with General Conditions.
- A Choir has freedom of choice of instruments to form accompaniment - these include tuned and un-tuned percussion (except in sections 807 & 807.1). However, musical directors should bear in mind that the item is "Choral" and the use of instruments must not be dominant.
- No curtain is permitted during a performance between items.
- Conductors optional. One conductor may conduct any number of choirs.
- Conductors or musical directors are not to sing with the choir except in sections 805 (up to grade 4 Primary) & 812, 815, 815.1, 815.2 and 817.
- An individual member of a choir is NOT allowed to take part in more than one choir competing in the same section EXCEPT where a student performing in a school choir may also compete in one other non-school group.
- Up to two members may be interchanged between items, but the maximum number
must not be exceeded on stage at any one time. - Items may be sung in any language, except as specified for section 816 Multicultural choir.
- Accompaniment may be up to any THREE acoustic instruments which may include piano. Backing tracks are NOT permitted (except in sections 807 & 807.1). This allows for adherence to the composer’s musical intent to a particular piece. A piano will be placed to the left of the conductor and will remain on stage for all sections. Additional instruments are not permitted side stage.
- Show Performance Choirs sections 807 & 807.1 and 807.2 and Gospel/Sacred/Worship Choir sections 815,815.1, 815.2 may have up to five (5) instruments as accompaniment which may include piano. Additional instruments are not permitted side stage. Amplifiers are permitted for instruments in sections 807, 807.1, 807.2, 815, 815.1 and 815.2 only.
- A maximum of three (3) microphones for vocalists are permitted in sections 807, 807.1, 807.2, 813, 813.1, 815, 815.1 and 815.2 only
- The turning on and off of lights, dimming lights, lighting projections, special effects etc. are not permitted in any choral sections.
- Please note that there will be a piano will be placed left of stage (front stage OP side) which may or may not be used. This will remain in this place for all sections of the Choral competition. This will not be moved off or around the stage under any circumstances.
- Costume changes are not permitted in any choral sections. As such there is only a maximum of 2 “helpers” per choir allowed back stage or in the Green Room.
- Choral risers will be set up and left on stage for all choral sections except sections 807, 807.1, 807.2, 813.1 and 815.1. Whilst their usage is not compulsory they will not be moved between performances.
- In all sections, music for the adjudicator is required. All bars must be numbered. Music must be sent by the due dates notified and will not be accepted on the day of the competition.

- An Australian arrangement is not an Australian composition.
- Time restrictions must be adhered to. Performance time must not exceed the specified time limit for each section. Adjudication will cease when a time limit has been reached.
17. AUDIENCE School groups of 10 or more, for a fee of $3 per student, may be part of the audience, providing they are effectively supervised. Students who are performing in an evening session would need to be registered as a school group and pay to be a part of the audience in an afternoon session. Prior arrangement for these education group bookings must be made with the RSSS office. 18 Age limit will be deemed as at the 1st January of the current year. Choristers entered in any secondary school aged choirs must be 18 years of age and younger or enrolled in high school. Proof of age and/or enrolment may be required if appeals are lodged. ANTICIPATED TIMETABLE: Where possible, sections will be scheduled as per the following dates. Please note, however that dates remain subject to change depending on the number of entries received. Dates and times will be confirmed within four weeks of the entry closing date. Choirs to consist of no less than 15 voices. Choirs are required to sing two contrasting songs; one of which must be by an Australian composer.

| | This section is aimed at giving choirs the opportunity to perform on stage and to benefit from our adjudicator’s encouragement and advice.
Open to choirs of not less than 15 voices.
Only open to primary school choirs.
Each choir to perform two pieces, a unison piece, and a part song.
Accompaniment may be up to three acoustic instruments (which may include piano).
Choirs will be performing to achieve a critique and a standard – gold, silver, or bronze. Multiple standards at any level may be awarded. All choirs will receive a medal & certificate stating the achievement attained.
To provide greater clarity for assessing a choir standard, choirs entering this section will be able to select one song of their own choice and must also perform a song provided by the adjudicator

807 | SHOW/PERFORMANCE CHOIR - Primary/Junior School Group Primary/Junior School |
| | Open to Primary age choirs.
Choirs to consist of no less than 15 voices.
This section, focusing on entertainment, is intended to incorporate choral singing with other performance elements e.g., featured solos and duets, movement/ basic choreography. The major focus for adjudication will be on the choral element. Whilst soloists can feature in this section, they are not to dominate and perform for more than 25% of each song.
A piano will be placed left of stage (front stage OP side) which may or may not be used.
Hand-held props, instruments and costumes are optional.
Up to five instruments with a maximum of three amplified instruments are permitted, plus the piano without microphone. Additional instruments and microphones will not be permitted side stage.
Power is available on stage, but musicians must supply their own amplifiers which must be tagged & tested prior to the performance.
Three microphones for vocalists and a facility to play a backing CD will be provided.
Choral risers will not be on stage during this section.
Costume changes are not permitted.
Programme to consist of a minimum of two contrasting styles of song, which may be contained within a medley.
Choirs entering in this section will be required to confirm the number of amplified instruments and microphones at least two weeks prior to competition.
Choirs in this section may be required to arrive at least 1 hour prior to the session to allow time for theatre sound technicians to confirm and check requirements prior to the commencement. Choirs will be advised at least one week prior to competition.

Up to five instruments with a maximum of three amplified instruments are permitted, plus the piano without microphone.
Power is available on stage, but musicians must supply their own amplifiers which must be tagged & tested prior to the performance.
Three microphones for vocalists and a facility to play a backing CD will be provided.
Choral risers will not be on stage during this section.
Costume changes are not permitted during this item.
Programme to consist of two contrasting styles of song, which may be contained within a medley.
Choirs in this section may be required to arrive at least 1 hour prior to the session to allow time for theatre sound technicians to confirm and check requirements prior to the commencement. Choirs will be advised at least one week prior to competition.

Choirs to present a well-balanced program of no less than three pieces that includes part singing (at least 4-part harmony in two songs and 2 or 3 parts in the others) in a contrast of styles and tempo.
At least one selection of the program to be by an Australian composer.
