The age for all competitors shall be taken as of December 31, 2022.

MUSIC

This year Wellington Eisteddfod is asking all competitors to upload an electronic version of their music to Stardom. CDs will no longer be accepted.

Once the program has been finalised, a link will be emailed to competitors with a step-by-step guide explaining how to upload their music. Competitors will have four weeks to upload their music once the program has been released.

The committee will be unable to accept late uploads. If music is not submitted before the deadline, this will be considered a withdrawal and no refund will be given. If anyone experiences problems uploading music, please contact the registrar BEFORE the deadline.

Competitors are asked to bring a backup of their music on a USB drive.

ADJUDICATOR’S MASTER CLASS (D159)

The Adjudicator’s Master Class is a new experience being offered this year by the eisteddfod committee for dancers aged 13 years and older, particularly targeting those competing in the intermediate and senior Rotary scholarships. The free master class will be a two-hour dance lesson hosted by the adjudicator, after senior solo classes have been held and before the senior championships are contested. It’s hoped the master class will help dancers finetune their routines before they compete in championships while also allowing the adjudicator to gain insight into the abilities of the performers. Dance teachers will be able to watch the master class, which will be held on stage at the Wellington Civic Centre.

To be eligible to participate in the master class, competitors must have performed in at least four solo classes in Classical, Modern, Contemporary, Demi-Character, National Character, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop and Song & Dance (excluding improvisations).

TIME LIMITS

Solos – 6 years and under 2 minutes

Solos – 7 years and over 3 minutes

Duos and Trios 3 minutes

Improvisation 1½ minutes

HSC Performance 5 minutes

Dance and School Groups 5 minutes

Championships 4 minutes

Penalties may apply if time limits are exceeded. This will be at the discretion of the adjudicator.

TIGHTS
Tights must be worn by all girls in all dance performances (except school groups) or they will not be able to perform. Tights may be footed, footless, stirrup, knee or mid-thigh length.

GENERAL

Any dancer younger than 12 years who leaves the stage during a performance will be allowed to return to the stage to continue, but will not be eligible for a place.

In the event of this happening in any other age group, it will be at the adjudicator’s discretion if a competitor is allowed to return to the stage.

PROPS

No straw, glitter, lit candles, sparklers or flame of any kind will be permitted on stage.

Props are to be placed on stage by the competitor where possible.

All equipment must be moved from the backstage area at the end of each session.

STAGE & CURTAIN INFORMATION

The stage area will be covered with a Tarkett dance floor.
The curtain will only be used for eight years groups and younger if required.

JAZZ

No hip hop, cabaret or musical theatre.

Only three acrobatic elements.

IMPROVISATIONS
Music for the improvisation classes will be selected by the adjudicator.

Only competitors are allowed in confinement rooms during these classes.
Failure to comply with the following dress code may lead to disqualification

Girls – plain-coloured leotard and dance tights.

Boys – plain fitted dancewear; tights & singlet/leotard.

Ballet – a short sheer ballet skirt is permitted.

Jazz – plain jazz pants will be allowed for this section only.

Hip hop – performers may wear a plain t-shirt and pants.

Musical theatre - two props will be supplied on stage and must be incorporated into the routine.

No hair accessories permitted.

DEMI-CHARACTER & SONG and DANCE

No voiceovers or backing vocals are permitted on music tracks.

HIP HOP

Various dance styles influenced by the rhythm and techniques of street, funk and hip hop music.

LIP SYNC SOLO

Lip syncing is the ability of the competitor to move their lips silently in synchronisation with an existing vocal track. Competitors perform live to a vocal backing track of their choice. Go for it – entertain us!

ACROBATICS

This is a dance with unique choreography, combining drama and acrobatics. A minimum of three acrobatic movements must be included (eg. front and back walkovers, front, and back handsprings, barani or aerials).

ENTERTAINMENT/VARIETY

This may include any dance style not stated in the program. No Repeats. May include routines such as Musical Theatre/Comedy/Song & Dance.

Adjudicated on entertainment value.

HSC SOLO

This adjudication-only section is for students in Years 11 and 12 studying dance for the HSC. The dance must reflect the study outcomes of the course – ie. the use of motifs and safe dance practice.

SPECIAL NEEDS

Duos & trios – one dancer must be classified SN.

Groups – a minimum of three dancers must be classified SN.

OWN CHOREOGRAPHY

Competitors are to choreograph and perform a solo in any dance form they wish.

The performance must be all the student’s own work and will be adjudicated on choreography and originality of ideas.

Students who teach or regularly help a teacher in a class and receive remuneration (paid or in-kind) are not eligible to enter.

DUOS & TRIOS

Competitors are allowed to perform in a maximum of TWO duos or trios in the same class, provided each entry is with a different partner. Partners cannot be changed once the program is published unless the committee is notified before the start of the eisteddfod.

GROUPS
Groups must have a minimum of four dancers and enter the age division relevant to their oldest dancer.

Dance studios can enter a maximum of two entries in each group class.

The only exception is if there is no class for an age group, meaning a studio may enter two 12 & under groups as well as two 10 & under groups in a 12 & under, providing this is noted at the time of entry.

SMALL TOWN

For the purposes of the Wellington Eisteddfod, a small town is defined as having a population of fewer than 7000 people within its town limits. No repeats allowed.

Championships

All Championship routines must not be a repeat of a previous performance in this competition.

Classical Ballet Championships

To qualify for entry in a Classical Ballet Championship, competitors must have performed in their appropriate age class in the classical ballet solo section PLUS one Demi-character or Classical ballet improvisation section.

Competitors in each championship are to perform two routines - one Classic & one Neo-Classical or one Demi-character routine.

Tap Championships

To qualify for entry in a Tap Championship, competitors must have performed in the appropriate age class in the tap solo section PLUS one waltz tap, fast tap, slow tap or Tap improvisation section.

Competitors in each championship are to perform two routines - a slow tap and a fast tap routine

Jazz Championships

To qualify for entry in a Jazz Championship, competitors must have performed in the appropriate age class in both the jazz solo and jazz improvisation sections.

Competitors in each championship are to perform one jazz routine.

National Character Championships

To qualify for entry in a National Character Championship, competitors must have performed in the appropriate age class in the solo National character section.

Competitors in each championship are to perform one National character routine.

Modern Championships

To qualify for entry in a Modern Championship, competitors must have performed in the appropriate age class in both the Modern solo and Modern improvisation sections.

Competitors in each championship are to perform one Modern routine.

Contemporary Championships

To qualify for entry in a Contemporary Championship, competitors must have performed in the appropriate age class in both the Contemporary solo and Contemporary improvisation sections.

Competitors in each championship are to perform one Contemporary routine.

Hip Hop Championships

To qualify for entry in a Hip Hop Championship, competitors must have performed in the appropriate age class in both the Hip Hop solo and Hip Hop improvisation sections.

Competitors in each championship are to perform one Hip Hop Routine.

Scholarships

ROTARY SCHOLARSHIPS sponsored by Wellington Rotary Club

By sponsoring these scholarships, the Wellington Rotary Club hopes to encourage participation and excellence in the performing arts. The adjudicator will judge competitors on their overall performance in the section.

Competitors must perform in a minimum of six solo classes at the Wellington Eisteddfod, including three contrasting solo classes.

A minimum of eight competitors is required for the full scholarship to be awarded. If there are fewer than eight competitors, prize money may be reduced.

Winners of scholarships last year are not eligible to enter

Intermediate and senior scholarships may be combined if there are insufficient entries.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS sponsored by Wellington Eisteddfod Society

Entrants must live in or receive lessons in the postcodes of 2820, 2868 or 2818.

To qualify, competitors must perform in three appropriate age solo sections in any dance style.

A minimum of four competitors is required for the full scholarship to be awarded. If there are fewer than four competitors, prize money may be reduced.

There is no entry fee.

School Dance Groups

The purpose of the school dance section is for entrants to tell a story using choreography, costume, music, and movement. Performances may include vocals, drama and mime.

Pre-School, daycare and Kindergarten groups may include nursery rhymes, poems, dance, singing or a combination of these. Teachers are not permitted on stage but may stand on the floor in front of the stage.

All dances must be choreographed by a teacher or student from the school.

Schools may enter more than one group in each section.

Each individual student may compete for a maximum of twice in each class.

Curtains may be used at the beginning of routines, but only if time permits and at the discretion of the committee. Curtains will not be used at the end of routines.
