Guidelines and Rules for Speech and Drama

Competitors, teachers and parents should read the Entry Guidelines and General Rules of the Warrnambool Eisteddfod at the beginning of the Syllabus and the Programme.

All information with regard to entry, timing, entry fees, prizes and specific conditions for each section is available on the Stardom on-line entry system (www.stardom.com.au).

GENERAL CONDITIONS:

******* It is a requirement that each individual performer, group or school sanction the recording of performance (unless there is a specific reason, for instance a legal condition, for exclusion).

Please be aware publicity shots may be taken during the Eisteddfod. Please advise the Convenors if there is a specific reason - for instance, legal condition - for exclusion of a particular performer.

NOTE: Recorded performances and photography will only be used for advertising the Eisteddfod and will remain the copyright of Warrnambool Eisteddfod Inc.

  1. Competitors’ names and birth dates should be on the entry. 

  2. Competitors must submit copies for the adjudicator at registration at least 30 minutes before commencement of section.

  3. Copy of ‘Poem Written by Competitor’ to be forwarded to the coordinator KATRINA KEMP warrnamboolsdeisteddfod@gmail.com  two weeks prior to the event. If not received by this date, the competitor will not be eligible to compete in the section.

  4. In the ‘Poem for Two’ sections, a competitor may only enter ONCE. NO MULTIPLE ENTRIES WITH ANOTHER PARTNER WILL BE ALLOWED.

  5. Competitors competing in more than one section must not repeat the same item.

  6. Competitors who have won first prize at a Warrnambool Eisteddfod in 2023 may not perform that winning item again in 2024. This applies to individual or group performances. All performances will be checked and those breaking the rule will not be considered for a place.

  7. Backing sounds and/or musical accompaniments are not allowed.

  8. All works must be performed from memory except where otherwise stated. – Adjudicators will provide prompts if needed.

  9. All competitors, teachers and parents should ensure that works performed are suitable for a "family audience". Care should be taken with language, gesture, costuming, movement, lyrics and concepts. Adjudicators may reserve the right to disqualify performers presenting unsuitable material.

  10. Competitors in ALL sections must report to the Copies Table upon arrival to "Check In". This must be NO later than Fifteen Minutes prior to the commencement of the session
    -->The Copies Table will be found inside the main door of both the Theatre and Hall.

  11. Competitors who have not reported as present prior to the beginning of their Section may be considered ineligible to perform unless notification has been given to the presiding Committee member.

  12. Competitors need to be ready to take their place on stage at the beginning of the Section and in the order as set down in the Program.

  13. Competitors in Speech and Drama will be required to upload a copy of their poem / script to be performed to Stardom by the due date set by the Co-ordinator. This will be communicated to all entrants prior to the commencement of the Eisteddfod.

  14.  All adjudicator copies are to be marked: Competitor number and Section Number ONLY!

  15. TIME LIMITS will be strictly enforced. If the time limit is exceeded in mime no marks may be awarded and a bell will be rung to indicate that the performance is over time.

  16. Prizes - All competitors that did not place in Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 will receive a ribbon and certificate. All competitors that receive Highly commended will receive a ribbon and certificate. 
    All other prizes and specific conditions for each section are available on the Stardom on-line entry system(www.stardom.com.auand in the programme.

  17. Theatre etiquette is expected at all times. During performances there should be NO movement while any competitor is performing on stage in the Hall/Theatre. People may not disrupt, distract or in any way interfere with the performance of a competitor on stage.

  18.  The Adjudicator writes a report on each competitor's performance. This report will be available to be collected approximately 15 minutes after conclusion of each section.

  19. There is to be NO prompting of competitors. The Adjudicator is the only person allowed to prompt the competitor if needed. There will be absolutely NO prompting from the audience. Anyone found in violation will receive a warning from the President or committee members and may be advised to leave the venue.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Entries are to be confirmed a week prior to the event.

If there are fewer than four confirmed entries for either Special Event, that event will be cancelled.

If the event is cancelled, competitors will be notified by email as soon as possible.

Special Events Sections are not included in Aggregate Points.

The Beverly Melican Memorial Poetry Award. (SPECIAL EVENT)

Competitors must compete in Sections 228, 229 and 230.

First prize for the Award is a Trophy and $200, 2nd prize is $50

Any period of writing. Quality of selection will be taken into account. One of the pieces in Sections 228, 229, 230 must be by an Australian poet/author. Please identify the Australian reading when handing in to registration.

NO DUOS, TRIOS OR GROUPS SECTIONS WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE AGE POINTSCORE/AGGREGATE AWARDS.

The points will be calculated as follows:-

  1. First place:8 points,
  2. Second place:5 points,
  3. Third place:3 points,
  4. Highly Commended:1

Trophies will be awarded to the competitor with the highest aggregate points in each section.

Sections 228, 229 & 230 will not be included in the aggregate.

Schools will be asked to sign a receipt when the perpetual trophies are awarded to the school.
