A Competitor’s Pass is compulsory for all performers. Each pass must be named in permanent pen. Performers need a pass to compete and will not be allowed into the auditorium without a competitor’s pass clearly named and prominently displayed. Competitor’s Passes will NOT be available at the competition venue and MUST be pre-ordered and pre-paid. The Competitor’s Pass will entitle the performer to entry to any of the BPAC 2018 Events, entry to the Dance Workshops and the opportunity to perform at BPAC.

All students must be fully supervised by a studio representative at all times to ensure the health and safety of all performers at BPAC events

PRIZES

In each section there will be a First, Second, Third and Highly Commended. There will also be Very Highly Commended and Encouragement Awards, which may be awarded at the judge’s discretion for qualities they wish to acknowledge. Encouragement Awards are not dependent on point scores. Sponsorship for some group sections are 1^st $100; 2^nd $50; 3^rd $25. Cash prizes will be distributed from the sponsorship money raised. Minimum amounts for cash prizes are as follows: 1^st $50; 2^nd $30; 3^rd $20. All cash prizes will be distributed via direct deposit. Prize money to be claimed by 30 September, 2018.

GUIDELINES

1. Age is taken as at 1^st January, 2018

2. Each student may only dance twice in each section

3. Music copyright payments are the responsibility of the individual schools

4. Each school requires their own Public Liability Policy (Minimum $10 Million) Copy of Insurance Certificate of Currency MUST be forwarded with entry forms.

5. All competitors and other persons attending the Challenge do so at their own risk.

6. Entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis and will be limited to the amount of performance time available

7. All entries must include the name, contact phone number and email of two volunteers per studio or school per session entered or entries will not be accepted.

8. No communication with the judges during the course of the event will be permitted. The adjudicators decision is final.

9. Personal videotaping and flash photography are prohibited. Professional organizations are engaged to record performances.

10. Entrant’s choice of recorded music should be emailed to bpac.music@gmail.com (Larger files can be emailed using Dropbox or Google Drive)

11. Time Limits will be 5 minutes for all items.

12. Receipt of entries automatically entitles schools to membership of the Brisbane Performing Arts Challenge Inc. Schools may then nominate one representative to sit on the committee. This person may not be on the committee of any other eisteddfod or similar competition.

SECTION DEFINITIONS

Song & Dance/Song & Tap – Must be 50% Dance and 50% Song. Will be marked by two judges – vocal & dance, Microphones MAY NOT BE USED AT ALL!

Musical Theatre – From a stage or film musical and must include live singing, acting and choreographed movement and or dance. Must be presented in the style and context of the

musical. Song & dances are not acceptable. Microphones may be used.

Cabaret – A stylised entertainment suitable for performance at sophisticated venues. May include singing and different styles of dance. Microphones may be used.

Novelty – Should be novel and usually humorous. May incorporate different styles of dance and singing. Microphones may be used

Revuette – Must include at least two styles of dance and live singing. Microphones may be used for soloists but there also must be a segment that shows live singing WITHOUT

microphones as this will be marked by the vocal judge.

Contemporary – Abstract or experimental. An innovative way to move the body. Broad and creative technique.

Lyrical Jazz – Slow Modern or Neo Classical dance

Street Tap – relaxed arms and bodies

Group Improvisation – Groups must have 10+ students. They will be given a short piece of music for 15mins preparation time (isolated from other groups) and then perform on stage.

Open to Full timers

Hip Hop – a modern dance style, where traditional jazz technique is not the focus.

Jazz – may include elements of Hip Hop but must be predominantly technical jazz.

Cultural/ Ethnic - Any style representing culture of a group, country or nation.

Please note – Care should be taken to ensure dancers are costumed appropriately for their age group and that choreography and music choice considers the audience in attendance at the event.

MICROPHONES

Choir mics will be used for all schools. Two hand held radio mics will also be supplied for each school to use as they choose in the GLEE section only.
