RULES & CONDITIONS

Note General Rule 13: Performance must remain on stage, upstage of the proscenium.

  1. DEFINITIONS OF BANDS
  • Concert Band – a balanced ensemble of mainly woodwind, brass and percussion instruments as per score - usually a large group.
  • Symphony Orchestra - a full string section plus a proportional number of woodwinds, brass & percussion instruments – usually a large group.
  • String Orchestra – an ensemble consisting mostly of strings. May include percussion.
  • Stage Band – a small group of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a rhythm section.

The rhythm section may include any keyboard, an electric or an acoustic guitar, an electric or an acoustic bass and a drum kit. 

  • A vocalist may be included Stage Bands only.
  1. DEFINITION OF ENSEMBLES

a. Percussion Ensemble – a combination of tuned and untuned percussion unstruments

b. Mixed Ensemble – Combination of any instrument excluding percussion, unless the score dictates.

  1. ENSEMBLES, BANDS, ORCHESTRAS
  1. No member of one Ensemble will be permitted to perform with another Group or Ensemble in the same Section, unless playing a different instrument.
  2. Any Group or Ensemble entered as a School Group or Ensemble shall consist solely of current bonafide students of the class/school named.
  3. Beginner Band – Level .5 or under 1 year of study
  4. Concert Band “A” Grade – level 3 and above repertoire
  5. Concert Band “B” Grade – level 2.5 and under repertoire
  1. DUETS AND TRIOS
  1. One of the competitors may be under the Age Limit but may not enter BOTH the higher Age Section and their own Age Section.
  2. If any competitor is prevented from performing due to the withdrawal of one member, a substitute may be used.The Backstage Marshall must be notified of the change prior to the commencement of the Section.
  3. Trios may be reduced to Duos/Duets if necessary but must be advised before the commencement of the Eisteddfod.
  1. OWN CHOICE
  1. Sheet music or lyrics must be submitted to the Registrar on the day of performance, before commencement of Session outlined in General Rule 3.
  2. The same item must not be performed more than once by the same competitor in the current Eisteddfod.
  1. STAGE PLAN

     A stage plan for bands & orchestras must be submitted with Own Choice Music.

7 PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS FOR BANDS AND ORCHESTRAS

To avoid backstage congestion, and Limit set-up time for bands, the following percussion instruments will be available at the Theatre. All Groups are requested not to bring these instruments:

4 pedal timpani                        1 snare drum and stand           1 orchestral bass drum

1 pair orchestral crash cymbals                        1 bass drum (small size for primary school Groups)   

1 suspended cymbal    1 glockenspiel and stand         1 drum kit        1 xylophone

Stage Band Instruments – 1 electric piano /keyboard and 1 rhythm and 1 bass amp

8 PIANO – An upright piano will be provided for all age Solo Sections.

     A Grand Piano will be provided for the JS Bach Solo (piano) and the Instrumental Championship only.
