2018 Eisteddfod Rules

1.   EXPECTATIONS

1.1.  The Committee expects behaviour of teachers, competitors and audience to be appropriate to the occasion.
Offenders may be removed from the theatre, and further participation may be denied for this Eisteddfod and
future Eisteddfods.

2.   THE EISTEDDFOD

2.1.  The Bendigo Dance Eisteddfod Inc. holds an APRA licence, and will not be liable for any infringement of copyright.

2.2.  ONE ENTRY: only one entry is allowed from each competitor in each section.

2.3.  MUSIC: A tape / CD player will be provided.

2.4.  PROTESTS: to be made in writing within one hour and must be accompanied by a payment of $20 which will
not be refunded if the protest is deemed to be frivolous.

2.5.  STAGE EFFECTS:  no blackouts, smoke, fog effects, lighted candles, incense, sparklers, live animals
or naked flames permitted.

2.6.  PROPS AND SCENERY:  must be made to stand safely, they must not be attached to the theatre curtain and
they must not damage the stage floor.  Props should be kept to a minimum and all items should be labelled
with the competitors’ school.  All props must be removed from the theatre immediately after the end of the
session, to comply with health and safety requirements.

2.7.  BACKSTAGE: only Committee, music players, teachers and students are allowed backstage or side stage.
Passes / tickets must be visible.

2.8.  Inappropriate lyrics, costumes and / or movements on stage may lead to disqualification.

2.9.  Troupe prize money to be paid to the school four (4) weeks after the eisteddfod.

 

3.   ENTRIES

3.1.  AGE LIMIT: in all sections the age on 1^st January in the Year of the Eisteddfod will be accepted as the age of the competitor.

3.2.  ENTRY DATE: entries must be lodged before before 1^st May in the Year of the Eisteddfod.

3.3.  NON-ACCEPTANCE: the committee reserves the right to refuse any entry.

3.4.  REFUNDS: competitors are not entitled to any refund of fees.

3.5.  NAMES OF COMPETITORS: no competitor will be allowed to enter in solos, duos or trios unless their name appears on the entry form.

3.6.  MINIMUM/MAXIMUM: the committee may, at its discretion, combine, divide or cancel any section.

3.7.  NUMBER IN TROUPES: Minimum of five (5) competitors in all troupes and fifteen (15) in Concert Item.

3.8.  COMPETITORS IN TROUPES: a list of names of all troupe competitors, who are not entered as soloists, must be submitted with troupe entries.

3.9.  COMPETITORS: appearing in only an Adult Troupe or Concert Item, are NOT entitled to competitors’ passes.

3.10.  NOVICE: a novice is a competitor who, at the time of entry, has not won a 1^st, 2^nd or 3^rd prize, in any solo event, in any age group, for the section they are entering.

3.11.  RESTARTS: a competitor, who commences performing an item and stops, will be allowed to re-start the item for a critique only. Except as follows; if serious interference with, or premature cessation of a performance is caused by a fault of management or equipment, or by an accident beyond anyone’s reasonable control, then that item may be repeated and adjudicated without penalty.

3.12.  ADMINISTRATION FEE: One administration fee per entry family.

 

4.   ADJUDICATORS

4.1.  COMMUNICATION: with the adjudicators, either by competitors, teachers, parents, members of the audience, or relatives, during the eisteddfod is prohibited.

4.2.  PRIZE: the adjudicator has the right to withhold any prize.

4.3.  ASSISTANCE: the committee reserves the right to appoint a co-adjudicator, assistant, or substitute adjudicator when necessary.

 

5.   COMPETITORS OBLIGATIONS

5.1.  Competitors: acknowledge that they compete at their own risk on entering.

5.2.  BOOKING IN: booking in will commence 30 minutes prior to the commencement of the session. Failure to book in prior to your section starting will result in disqualification.

5.3.  MUSIC: to be booked in prior to the commencement of the section. Tape/CD to have one item of music only. Covers are required for all CDs. Competitors must ensure their tapes are cued correctly prior to arrival. Please make sure a back up is on hand.

5.4.  CDs: If the CD is prepared on a home computer, ensure it plays through a normal audio system. Please DO NOT USE RW-CDs (Re-Writeable). These are meant for computers and are sometimes not recognised in sensitive audio equipment.

5.5.  ORDER OF PERFORMANCE: competitors will appear in the order in which they appear in the programme.  They could be disqualified if not present when called to perform.

5.6.  INSURANCE: the committee requires all competitors to be responsible for insuring themselves and to obtain the appropriate licences.

5.7.  REPEATING ITEMS: competitors may not repeat any item.

5.8.  REHEARSAL: no rehearsal or practice is permitted on the stage or in the Foyer during the Eisteddfod.

5.9.  LIMITED COMPETITION: a competitor can only appear once in any one section, except for troupe interchanges, for the same school. Teachers entering two or more groups in a troupe section will be allowed an interchange of two performers. 

5.10.         AGE GROUPS - SOLO COMPETITORS: can only compete in their own age group.

                   - DUOS & TRIOS/TROUPES: must compete in the age group of the eldest performer.

                           Competitors may compete in different age groups with different partners.

5.11.  ALL COMPETITORS: must appear in the correct age sections.  Failure to do so will result in disqualification for the remainder of the Eisteddfod.  The school and the student will not receive those aggregate points.

5.12.  SONG AND DANCE / SONG AND TAP: all vocal work must be performed live by members of the item.  Recorded music must not contain any speaking or singing. In tap sections, other than song and tap, vocals are permitted in the recording.

5.13.  SONG AND DANCE: any dance style may be used, but no tapping allowed.

5.14.  JAZZ: shall include jazz, disco, cabaret and musical comedy (musical theatre) styles.

 

6.   GENERAL ADVICE

6.1.  CAMERAS, TAPE RECORDERS, VIDEO CAMERAS, PAGERS AND MOBILE PHONES: the use of these by members of the audience during the eisteddfod is strictly prohibited. Professionals have been hired by the Bendigo Dance Eisteddfod Inc. for videography.

6.1.1 Unauthorised recording of an item may result in the disqualification of the item.

5.2.  PROMPTING: no prompting is permitted.

5.3.  MEDIC-ALERT: bracelets etc. may be worn during performances. The Stage Manager must be advised beforehand.

5.4.  EMERGENCY: in the event of a medical emergency or accident situation, the Committee reserves the right to call an ambulance. Any cost incurred will be charged to the parent concerned. Ambulance subscription is recommended.

 

7.   THE COMMITTEE

7.1.  THE FINAL DECISION: the decision of the committee in all questions and disputes arising out of, or not provided for by these conditions shall be final.

7.2.  RECORD:  the committee reserves the right to photograph, record, broadcast, or telecast any item of the eisteddfod.

 

8.   ALL ENTRIES ARE RECEIVED SUBJECT TO THESE PROVISOS AND SHALL NOT BE SUBJECT TO ANY APPEAL AT LAW.

CHAMPIONSHIP AND AWARD RULES

 

Tap Championships: All dancers must perform a 4 minute routine, 2 minutes slow and 2 minutes fast consecutively.  To qualify for a Tap Championship section, competitors must perform in the open Tap Solo and one other open theatrical solo prior to the Championship section.

Jazz Championships: All dancers must perform a routine not exceeding 4 minutes. To qualify for a Jazz Championship section, competitors must perform in the open Jazz Solo and one other open theatrical OR classical solo prior to the Championship section. 

Song And Dance Championships: All dancers must perform 2 dances, one a Song and Dance, the other a Song and Tap.  To qualify, competitors must have appeared in the open Song and Tap Solo and the open Song and Dance Solo sections in their age group.

 

Classical Award: All dancers must perform 2 dances, one to be Classical and the other to be Character, Demi-Character or National.  To qualify, competitors must have appeared in the open Classical Ballet solo and one other open classical solo.

 

Modern Championships: All dancers must perform a Neo-Classical OR Contemporary routine not exceeding 3 minutes. To qualify for a Modern Championship section, competitors must perform in either the open Neo-Classical Solo OR open Contemporary Solo and one other classical solo section prior to the Championship section. 

 

SPECIAL SECTIONS RULES

 

Cabaret Entertainer: All dancers must perform 2 dances.  At least one must be a song with dance.  To qualify, competitors must have appeared in two open solo sections.  The Entertainer may come down into the audience. 

Improvise Jazz, Improvise Tap & Improvise Creative Dance: To music supplied by the adjudicator (1½ mins). Plain black leotard or plain black pants and plain black top with no embellishments must be worn. (Creative Dance: any genre in the classical field).

Voice Over: Voice over vocals (not mimed).                                           

In the Year of the Eisteddfod VCE Students: Dance Performance students only. Remade or Own Choreography or prepared work.

Adult Class: Own choice routine. This section may include teachers.

Concert Items: This item will be judged on theatrical and spectacular merit, suitable for family entertainment. Minimum of 15 Competitors. May include teachers and parents of the school. Curtains for this item are the responsibility of the teacher.

 

 

Aggregates and Special Awards

 

1.    Solo aggregate trophies will be awarded to the competitors gaining the highest aggregate points in open solo sections and novice solo sections only.  To be eligible for a trophy a competitor must have a minimum of six (6) points. 

 

2.    Regardless of ties, 5 points will be awarded for 1^st, 3 points 2^nd, 2 points 3^rd, and 1 point for HM. Except for Concert Item will be awarded for 1^st 20 points, 2^nd 15 points, 3^rd 10 points and 5 points for HM.

  

3.    Grand Aggregate Scholarships will be awarded to each competitor gaining the highest aggregate points in classical and theatrical competition, $200 to each and a perpetual trophy.  In the case of a tie, the cash prize will be split equally between the winners.

 

4.     Awards will be presented to the teachers of the schools gaining the highest aggregate points, in solos, duos/trios and troupe sections (including Concert Item).

  

5.    Awards will be presented to Most Promising Dancer theatrical and classical.  These awards are decided by the adjudicator at their discretion.

 

6.    Encouragement Awards will be presented to Theatrical and classical Dancers.  These awards are decided by the adjudicator at their discretion.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      

7.   Perpetual trophies recipients are responsible for the cost of engraving the trophy received. Trophies must be returned to the Committee in the same condition they were received at the commencement of the following years’ Eisteddfod.
