Please refer to the GENERAL RULES AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY TO THE MONASH YOUTH MUSIC FESTIVAL for all Strings Sections

STRINGS RECITAL—THE SIR ZELMAN COWEN SCHOOL OF MUSIC AWARD 2018

This section comprises a video audition, in which the entrant records a 15-minute programme with accompanist, and submits it together with Programme notes. A panel will view all videos and select six Finalists, judged as having performed a balanced program of the highest musical quality, to compete at the 2018 Monash University Chamber Music Festival.

Entrants must:

1. Register and pay online through the MYMF portal on Stardom (www.stardom.com.au) by 22 June.
2. Create an audition video of their programme, with accompanist, and upload to a YouTube account
3. Create programme notes of no greater than 100 words, clearly listing the works being performed and the performers’ names (i.e. both Entrant and accompanist) and include a short biography of the Entrant’s musical activities and achievements.
4. Send both the Programme and Audition Video link to arts.mymf@monash.edu by Monday 2 July. The programme must not be changed after this date.

All pieces in an entrant’s programme that require an accompaniment must have a “live” accompanist, unless an alternative is clearly specified in the score, for example, a composition for solo violin, piano and prepared tape. Pre-recorded piano accompaniments are not acceptable. This rule applies to both the Audition Video and the performance in the Finals.
Music performed for this section shall consist of a balanced programme of three or more pieces not to exceed the overall performance time-limit of 15 minutes. Music should be of a standard similar to pieces in the VCE or AMEB Grade 8 syllabuses or higher.
The titles and composers of the pieces and their order entered on the Stardom website may be modified between Friday 22 June and Monday 2 July as pieces are rehearsed and selected. However, the final selection of music must be entered by 2 July and strictly as per the video submitted.
All videos will be judged and six Finalists will be selected. MYMF will advise all entrants of their selection or non-selection as Finalists on Tuesday 10 July 2018.
The Finalists will be invited to perform their programme at the Zelman Cowen School of Music’s Chamber Music Festival on the evening of Friday 29 July. Finalists who do not achieve a placing will be awarded a Finalist Certificate.

PLEASE NOTE: The Entry Fee will be $50 and is non-refundable. An entrant who does not submit an Audition Video, or who submits and Audition Video but is not selected to perform in the Finals, will not receive a refund. An entrant who is selected for the Finals but does not perform will not receive a refund.

Please refer to www.monashyouthmusicfestival.com.au and Schedule for more information.

GENERAL RULES AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY TO THE MONASH YOUTH MUSIC FESTIVAL

  1. The Festival is open to amateurs only. An amateur is one who does not derive income from the art in which he/she is entering.
  2. The age of performers will be as at the 1st August.
  3. Students of Adjudicators are not eligible to enter any solo sections their teacher is adjudicating.
  4. The AMEB Grade (or equivalent*) is the level at which the performer is studying at time of entry. Please verify with your music teacher that the “grade” of the piece to be performed is equivalent to the specified AMEB grade of the section to be entered to ensure fairness of competition.
  5. Entry fees are as scheduled. All entries must be via www.stardom.com.au. Entry fee payment may be made by credit card or cheque or as arranged with the Registrar. For cheque payment, mail the STARDOM invoice and the cheque (payable to the Waverley Music Eisteddfod) to The Registrar, PO Box 121, Mount Waverley, 3149.
  6. Where a performer is entering more than one section, a different program must be performed for each section.
  7. Soloists performing with accompaniment must use an accompanist using an acoustic instrument (e.g. piano or guitar). Refer to individual section notes. Pre-recorded accompaniment is not accepted in any section (except under certain circumstances in Section S08. Refer to Strings Recital Notes).
  8. Performers requiring the Official Accompanist must make contact at least 2 weeks prior to their performance. The Accompanist reserves the right to decline to assist if this condition is not met. Rehearsals are recommended, and are to be privately arranged with the Accompanist (this cost is not covered by the Festival entry fee.)
  9. A Notice of Appearance with date, time and venue will be forwarded to each performer.
  10. The performer MUST register within the registration time and prior to section commencement time unless prior arrangement has been made with the Registrar. The performer must be ready to perform in the order shown in the Program and/or Running Sheet. A performer may be disqualified if not ready to perform when called.
  11. When registering, a copy of the music, with all bars clearly numbered, must be given to the Registrar. Only original sheet music is to be used by the performer. Refer to COPYRIGHT NOTE Rule No. 25.
  12. Performance selections must be chosen to finish within time limits prescribed. A bell or signal will indicate the expiration of the time and the point at which adjudication ceases. Performers have 20 seconds to cease playing without penalty. Performers exceeding the 20 second overtime limit may be disqualified.
  13. The Committee reserves the right to appoint alternative adjudicators and accompanists, and to divide any section for adjudication.
  14. In the event of an insufficient number of entries in any section, the Committee reserves the right to cancel, modify or merge the section with another. The prizes awarded will be at the Adjudicator’s and/or Committee’s discretion.
  15. No entry fee will be refunded unless a section is cancelled.
  16. All performers must behave with kindness, courtesy and respect for all other performers at all times.
  17. Prizes will be presented at the conclusion of each section. It is the responsibility of each performer to collect their prize, certificate and Adjudicator’s Report.
  18. Performers and spectators must not communicate with the adjudicator until all their final section is completed. Any such contact may deem the contestant in question disqualified.
  19. THE ADJUDICATOR’S DECISION IS FINAL. Any protest must be made in writing to The Secretary, within one hour of adjudication, and be accompanied by a deposit of $10 to be forfeited if the protest is deemed unjustified.
  20. PHOTOGRAPHS – The Committee reserves the right to photograph any performer during the Monash Youth Music Festival. By submitting your entry, you have granted permission for photographs to be used for marketing or grant application purposes. Please advise the Photographer if you do not wish your photo to be taken.
  21. UNAUTHORISED RECORDING OF PERFORMANCES BY PHONE, CAMERA, VIDEO CAMERA OR OTHER EQUIPMENT IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Photos may be taken after the section has ended.
  22. COPYRIGHT—According to APRA/AMCOS and Copyright Australia Ltd. (CAL), Performers using copyright protected sheet music (i.e. not from memory) MUST USE ORIGINAL MUSIC PUBLICATION, not a photocopy. A photocopy is acceptable for adjudication purposes and will not be returned. Entrants are reminded that the primary responsibility for adherence to Copyright Law rests with the person/s doing or authorising the photocopying and it is also the performer’s responsibility to acquaint themselves with Copyright regulations available from APRA/AMCOS, 3-5 Sanders Place, Richmond. 3121. (www.apra-amcos.com.au). The Committee in no way condones the unlawful copying of Copyright material.
  23. ENTRIES CLOSE STRICTLY AS PER STATED ON THE WEBSITE. No late entries will be accepted.
Further information can be obtained from our website. All other matters should be referred to The Secretary, PO Box 121, MOUNT WAVERLEY VIC. 3149.
