RULES FOR MUSIC SECTIONS
CODE OF CONDUCT - APPLIES TO ALL WHO ATTEND THE EISTEDDFOD.
- DISRESPECTFUL AND INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR –Disparaging remarks and Inappropriate behaviour towards volunteers, committee members, fellow competitors or teachers, will NOT be tolerated. Such incidents may lead to disqualification (withdrawal of prizes, monies, trophies, and scholarships) and/or exclusion from the venue.
- SOCIAL MEDIA – Please be aware that defamation of character on social media towards any person involved in our Eisteddfod will not be tolerated and may result in disqualification or legal ramifications.
- THEATRE ETIQUETTE – Show respect for competitors during and after their performances e.g. no whistling, yelling etc. Please do not enter or leave the theatre/auditorium when performers are on stage. This creates a distraction for all. Listen quietly to the adjudicator’s comments.
1. RESTRICTED means NOT having won a FIRST PRIZE in any solo instrumental or vocal section at any previous Eisteddfod. The Restricted Rule applies up to the date of CLOSE OF ENTRIES OF THE EISTEDDFOD. Eligible competitors are permitted to enter restricted sections, unrestricted sections, or both.
2. The committee reserves the right to use the competitor's details in the compilation of the program, including photographs for publicity purposes. If you do not want to be photographed, it is the competitor's (or carer's) responsibility to notify a member of the Orange Eisteddfod Committee.
MUSIC
3. In all sections, competitors must hand one (1) copy of the selected music/ music and words, to the Office person – at least 20 MINUTES BEFORE THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE SESSION. The Committee accepts no responsibility for the loss of, or damage to any original works. Music should be printed, but if handwritten, it must be legible.
4. No competitor may perform the same item in more than one (1) section.
5. All music submitted must be clearly marked with SECTION NUMBER AND COMPETITOR’S NUMBER – NO NAME OR SCHOOL SHOULD BE VISIBLE.
6. The title and composer of each piece of music should be written neatly on the Music Information page. (See website to download.)
Please fill out a page for each piece of music performed and give it to the office volunteer on arrival.
7. ALL BARS IN MUSIC GIVEN TO THE ADJUDICATOR MUST BE NUMBERED.
8. Microphones allowed only in ‘Popular Song’ and ‘Open Contemporary Ensemble’ and Open and Senior 'Jazz/Stage Band' sections.
ACCOMPANISTS
9. * A competitor should consider providing his/her own accompanist so that accompaniment is then assured. A list of accompanists is provided for Vocal/Instrumental Sections but availability of accompanists cannot be guaranteed.
* Instrumental accompaniment ( when available) is recommended for solo performances, other than piano sections.
* PLEASE NOTE: ACCOMPANISTS ARE NO LONGER PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE. Fees should be negotiated with the accompanists for their services and paid directly to them.
Any rehearsals are at the competitor's cost, and should be negotiated with the accompanist. It is the competitor's responsibility to contact the accompanist. A list of official accompanists is provided below:

* BACKING TRACK: If live accompaniment is unavailable a recording can be used as long as it is of a solo instrument which simulates a live, solo accompaniment with no vocals.
NOTE: Popular Song sections 434,435,436 may use a backing track with multi instrumental accompaniment but no vocals.
Choir sections may use a backing track with no vocals.
All music to be used by an accompanist MUST BE IN THE HANDS OF THAT ACCOMPANIST AT LEAST TWO (2) WEEKS BEFORE THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE EISTEDDFOD,
Performers should consult the accompanist about preferred presentation of sheet music eg no staples
TIME LIMITS
10. Competitors must comply strictly with the TIME LIMITS. Competitors will not be adjudicated after the specific time limit has elapsed. At the commencement of the music/song/piece, etc, the timekeeper will set the time to the appropriate time allowed for that section (the actual playing or singing time). Upon the time being reached, a bell will be rung and adjudication will cease. A second bell may be rung if needed. Competitors who continue after the time limit has elapsed may not be awarded a prize and a comment about the time excess will be noted on the comment sheet.
Time given is the total time allowed for singing or playing time in that section, whether for one or two items.
PLEASE KEEP TO THE TIME LIMITS WHICH ARE ALLOCATED.
COMPETITORS’ EQUIPMENT
11. Competitors’ equipment must be brought into the venue through the door provided,` ½ an hour before each session. All equipment must be removed from the stage and venue at the conclusion of each session.
IT IS THE COMPETITOR’S RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT ALL ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT IS SAFETY CHECKED AND TAGGED.
PRESENTATION OF PRIZES:
12. Prizes will be awarded at the discretion of the adjudicator, especially when there is only one competitor in the section. Presentation of prizes will be as follows, wherever possible:
• Major Prizes and medals to be presented on the stage following adjudication.
• Money prizes to be collected from the Office.
• The onus is on the competitor to collect all prizes, medals, certificates, reports, money and music etc.
WINNERS OF SCHOLARSHIP SECTIONS:
13. Scholarship winners are not eligible to enter these sections again until three (3) years have elapsed.
* Scholarship entrants must have competed in at least two (2) other solo sections of the same discipline to be eligible to enter the scholarship section.
** Senior and Junior Scholarship entrants must select two contrasting pieces to perform, neither of which has been performed in previous sections.
*** Scholarship entrants must study music in Orange, and scholarship money is to be used for music tuition in Orange.
GRADE SECTIONS:
14. Selection of music to play in these sections: Competitors should choose a piece of music which is listed in the AMEB syllabus for the grade they have entered this year.
DUETS:
15. An Instrumental Duet is when two (2) instruments are played together using music specifically written for a “duet”, not a solo instrument with accompaniment.
A Vocal Duet is when two (2) singers sing together in two part harmony (not in unison).
The names and dates of birth of both performers must be provided when entering a duet section.
A competitor may perform twice in a section but with different partners.
COPYRIGHT RULE:
16. The competitor may hand in a music photocopy for the use of the adjudicator, provided that it has been made from an original music work. However the photocopy must be destroyed by the Eisteddfod committee at the end of the section, and it cannot be handed back to the competitor .
NB Original music provided for the use of the adjudicator will be handed back to the competitor at the end of the section.
BANDS/ENSEMBLES/CHOIRS: Note: CHOIR NUMBERS are limited to a maximum of 100 voices, unless otherwise stated in the section description.
17. Leaders must hand their music (for the Adjudicator) to the Green Room officials at least 20 minutes before the session begins.
18. Leaders must submit to the Green Room officials a list of members of the Band/ Ensemble/ Choir performing in each section. This is to comply with the Workplace, Health and Safety rules of the venues.
19. It is the responsibility of the leader to notify the Green Room before the performance of permission to photograph/video the group.
20. The performers in each group should be bona fide members of that group.
21. Organisations can enter more than one group in a section as long as each group has a unique identity.
22. No teachers are permitted to perform with any group, other than in Additional Needs and Open sections.
23. Bands and School Ensembles/Choirs will perform at the Orange Function Centre, Eyles St, Orange.
24. Bands perform on the floor area of the Function Centre – not on stage, unless advised by the Committee.
25. No piano will be available for bands on Band Day.
26. Groups need to bring their own equipment – music stands, extension leads, CD Players if needed for Percussion Bands, school choirs etc.
27.All electrical equipment is to be checked and tagged, and is the responsibility of the competitors.
28. On Band Day, leaders are asked to ensure that equipment and instruments are stored neatly and compactly to avoid damage to them and that players are quiet while performances are taking place.
PIANO SECTIONS:
29. Extra devices cannot be brought on to the stage or attached to the piano.
THE PROGRAM:
30. THERE WILL BE NO CHANGE TO THE PRINTED PROGRAM. Please check entries with your teacher as soon as you receive the receipt. Contact us if incorrect for no changes will be made after the program is finalised. If your AMEB music examination is scheduled on your performance day and time, then please notify a committee member 7 days before your programmed time. You are then required to produce your appointment schedule letter to the committee member. Two or more committee members will decide if you can be allocated a different spot. You can then be adjudicated but not given a place in the scoring list. This rule will be strictly adhered to.
You are then eligible to enter a scholarship section.
ENCOURAGEMENT AWARDS:
• The City of Orange Eisteddfod Pianoforte Encouragement Award Trophy:
For a competitor who performed in any restricted piano sections 8-12 years.
• Melissa Buccholz's Encouragement Trophies
for * Junior Band, and * a primary age woodwind soloist
• An Orange Regional Conservatorium voucher valued at $250
( to be redeemed at the ORC. eg. for lesson payment, instrument hire, concert tickets)
as an encouragement award to a competitor in each of these scholarship sections:
Senior Piano, Senior Strings, Senior Woodwind, Senior Brass, Junior Vocal
• RIBBONS will be awarded to each competitor in Additional Needs sections
* An encouragement trophy will be presented to a competitor in each junior scholarship section.
