2021 CONTEMPORARY VOCAL COMPETITION – MINI COMPETITION
To be read in conjunction with General Music Conditions 2021 (see below)

It Is understood that by entering Bendigo Competitions Society Contemporary Vocal Competition, you have read, understood and agree to abide by all rules and regulations which include COVID restrictions and relevant changes.
Bendigo Competitions Society aims to hold a safe event, and your safety and that of our volunteers is paramount. PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND OUR COMPETITION, EITHER AS A COMPETITOR OR AN AUDIENCE MEMBER IF YOU ARE UNWELL – THAT IS IF YOU HAVE A COLD OR FLU, OR VIRUS LIKE SYMPTOMS or if you are awaiting results for a COVID test. A lack of understanding will not be an acceptable reason for you to attend or to remain at the competition. YOUR TOTAL CO-OPERATION IS REQUIRED TO ENSURE THIS EVENT CAN OCCUR.
COVID regulations will be adhered to in accordance with government ruling at the time of the competition. Bendigo South East College will require you to use QR codes or sign in when attending the venue (these rules may change over time and these rules will be updated as changes come to hand). Marshalls will be at the venue to assist you with signing in and updating you on current COVID-19 rules.
LIMITED COMPETITION
- In 2021 the competition will run for two days only.
- In 2021 the competition is open to limited age groups.
- In 2021 the competition offers only three section categories per age group.
- All sections will be capped at 20 entrants. Entries will be open for a set time and close when the number limit is reached. A waiting list will be available – if you are not able to enter a desired section, you must message details of what you wish to enter and email to bgocomps@bigpond.net.au. You will be contacted if you have obtained an additional entry via the waiting list.
MUSIC, AUDIO EQUIPMENT AND EFFECTS:
- See General Music Conditions of Entry (below) Rule 5.
HYGIENE
- Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the building. Please bring your own hand sanitizer to event to ensure this is readily available to you.
- Masks – Masks may be required for all people in the venue aged 12 and above. Please ensure everyone over 12 has a mask. Performers may be required to wear masks back stage and will be able to remove them prior to performing.
- Ensure you maintain required social distancing.
- No sharing of water bottles or food.
AUDITORIUM
Currently in Victoria, 100% capacity is permissible – but this is subject to government legislation at the time of the competition.
- Ticket sales to be advised once entries close.
- Seating arrangements in the Bendigo South East Auditorium will be limited in accordance with government legislation.
- Entry and exits from the auditorium will be organized by ushers.
- Teachers will be issued with a pass which must be worn. Teacher passes need to be requested prior to the commencement of the competition. Teacher passes could be limited due to COVID density limits both back stage and in dressing rooms.
- Competitors wishing to be an audience participant MUST purchase a ticket due to limited seating arrangements.
- Strictly no filming or photography permitted in the auditorium of any performer at any time as this is a breach of child protection laws. If a breach occurs, this will result in the competitor being disqualified and the competitor and those with him/her being removed from the facility.
- The auditorium will be cleared at the end of each session to ensure seating is cleared for the next session and in order that any cleaning requirements can be adhered to.
RESTRICTED AREAS – DRESSING ROOM/REHEARSAL ROOM
These areas will be strictly monitored and will be subject to the COVID-19 rules at the time of the competition.
NO ENTRY at any time to these areas for parents/carers of students 10 years and over. Teachers are permitted in these areas.
- A COVID Marshall will monitor people entering and existing RESTRICTED areas.
- Children over 10 years of age MUST change themselves in between items. Children under 10 may have one parent assisting them to change – but preferably should not remain in the dressing room once change is completed. Teachers are allowed in the dressing rooms to assist and manage students.
- If you have big breaks between your items and do not wish to be in the auditorium, we ask that you leave the facility and return at a later time. Congregating in the foyer is discouraged - please do not be offended if you are asked to leave the foyer area.
- Do not bring excess luggage into the facility. Please keep everything to a minimum and all items are to be removed from the dressing rooms following your performance in a particular session.
PERFORMANCE AREA
- Adjudication/Prizes – All competitors will reassemble on stage to hear the adjudicators remarks and for the awarding of prizes. Competitors will form a socially distanced semi-circle around the stage area. Those awarded places will step forward.
COMMUNAL AREAS
- The foyer cannot be used as a communal area.
- In any areas that may be designated as communal areas, people need to adhere to current social distancing regulations. These areas, if any, will be monitored by COVID Marshalls and people may be asked to move on if there is concern about numbers as legislated density numbers apply.
CANCELLATION
Entries are non-refundable.
Should Bendigo Competitions Society Inc. Contemporary Vocal Competition be cancelled due to COVID-19, a refund will be provided to entrants. A $10.00 cancellation fee will be taken from the entry costs to cover costs which the Society is obliged to pay regardless of whether the competition takes place or not.
NECESSARY CHANGES
Bendigo Competitions Society Inc reserves the right to make any changes to COVID-19 rules or the Contemporary Vocal Rules when and if required. Notification of changes will be posted on the Society Facebook page where possible.
General Music Conditions of Entry 2021
1. RISK
1.1 All competitors enter and perform at this competition at their own risk.
2. ENTRY:
2.1 Music Competition is open to amateurs.
2.2 Competitors are not entitled to a refund in cases of non-appearance in any section.
2.3 Refund of entry money will not be granted following registration.
2.4 A condition of entry is that an administration fee is required per family – multiple entries are entered on one entry each family is required to pay the
administration fee.
2.5 Age of entry - age at 1st January of the year your are entering.
3. ADJUDICATOR:
3.1 The decision of the Adjudicator is final, and no discussion or correspondence can be entered into.
3.2 No person may communicate with the Adjudicator during the course of the competition.
4. MUSIC:
4.1 Competitors must provide music to the booking office (for the Adjudicator) well in advance of the commencement of their section/s.
4.2 Ensure all music for the Adjudicator has been photocopied. Photocopied scores must be provided for the Adjudicator in all disciplines, (except the Contemporary Vocal discipline.)
Please do not provide music books to be given to the adjudicator.
4.3 Original music should be used for the Accompanist. If photocopies are used, the competitor must produce the original music to comply with copyright rules.
4.4 The sheet music should not have any competitor or teacher names. Each score should be clearly marked in the top right-hand corner – with the Section number and Competitor’s number (as per Official Program).
4.5 All bars must be clearly marked and numbered on music scores to be handed to the adjudicator.
4.6 In compliance with copyright rules photocopies will not be returned to competitors.
4.7 The Society does not accept any responsibility for music books or scores, USBs, CDs or other devices that are not collected backstage or from the office immediately after the section finishes.
4.8 For Music sections that specify AMEB/ANZCA levels, competitors may only enter the level being studied in the current year. A useful reference is the “AMEB Schedule of Syllabuses”.
4.9 PIANO - NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS COMPETITION.
5. AUDIO EQUIPMENT AND EFFECTS:
5.1 It is anticipated music will be able to be uploaded into the Stardom system ONE WEEK prior to the commencement of the competition – PLEASE CHECK IN STARDOM CLOSER TO THE TIME OF THE COMPETITION – INFORMATION RE UPLOADING WILL BE PROVIDED CLOSER TO THE TIME OF THE COMPETITION AND SUPPORT WILL BE AVAILABLE RE UPLOADING. If uploading is available, this will assist with upholding the regulations around COVID-19 as handling of CD’s will not be required. A professional sound system comprising a CD player, MP3 and IPOD facility will be available at the venue if uploading does not proceed.
5.2 Digital recording of music is preferred.
5.3 Early booking in will assist the Society with the smooth running of the competition.
5.3.1 The Society does not accept responsibility for any recording medium that will not play correctly. Duplicate copies of recordings are strongly recommended AND a back-up copy on a device is also recommended.
6. TIME LIMITS:
6.1 Competitors are required to adhere to time limits. REPEATS SHOULD BE AVOIDED within an item. The timing of an event will begin with the commencement of the music and end with the conclusion of the music.
7. AGE GROUPS:
7.1 In any section subject to an age limit, a competitor’s age as of 1st January (Year of the Competition) is deemed to be the age of the competitor.
7.2 Competitors may choose to enter older age groups as well as his/her own age group except when a section stipulates the lower age group. (e.g.13-17 years).
8. MUSIC STANDS:
8.1 Music stands will be available for all sections in all disciplines.
9. DUETS OR ENSEMBLES:
9.1 Individual competitors may be part of more than one duet or ensemble in a section.
9.2 The same duet or ensemble may only enter once in a particular section.
10. COMMUNICATION:
10.1 Communication with competitors regarding confirmation of entry, and a program schedule will be published on Bendigo Competitions Society Face Book page.
11. LEILA WATSON MEMORIAL MUSIC CHAMPIONSHIP: (not occurring in 2021)
11.1 The Committee reserves the right to invite one or more competitors to participate in this Invitational Championship.
12. DISQUALIFICATION:
12.1 Any competitor incorrectly appearing in any section will be disqualified.
13. RESTARTS:
13.1 A competitor who commences performing an item and stops will be allowed to restart the item at the end of the section for a critique only. However, if the restart is caused by a technical fault in equipment or the wrong music has been played, a restart for adjudication will be allowed providing the fault is quickly corrected.
14. REHEARSALS:
14.1 No rehearsal is permitted on the stage during the Eisteddfod.
